Archaeologists have discovered two unknown Mayan city – Polish Radio

The new findings may help in better understanding of the Mayan civilization.

The ruins of two ancient Mayan cities include: pyramids, palaces with impressive altars and huge doors. Lagunita was discovered in the 70′s of the twentieth century by the American archaeologist Eric Von EUWA, but he left the exact location of the city.

A group of scientists under the leadership of Ivan Sprajca with of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences she found them on the Yucatan Peninsula. – helped us aerial photos – says Sprajc. Both Lagunita and Tamchen cover an area of ​​approx. 12 hectares.

In the studied region of the Yucatan there are no other sites of this type. Stylistic analysis of the outdoor sights just the cities indicates that the centers have flourished during the period 600 -1000 AD One of the stele has already been discovered were dated to 711 years. Both cities were created much earlier, probably in the period 250 BC 300 N.E.

Archaeologists believe the biggest success to find a large door on which were carved enormous mouth. They may represent a Mayan deity of fertility of the earth. Leader of the expedition, explains that these doors symbolize the entrance to the cave and the water world, a mythical place of origin of maize. – The door symbolizes the entrance to the place of origin of the sacred plants and ancestors – says Sprajc.

According to the researchers, both cities were created in preklasycznym period of the Mayan civilization, that is, between the year 300 BC to 250 AD. Research funded international group of experts, among others, the United States, Austria, Mexico and Slovenia.
